On August 14, Twitter stops delivering outbound SMS in UK due to prohibitive costs. Twitter has been extremely popular and rumor abounds on when it will annouce the integration of a payment system to generate revenue and offset service costs. Some may consider this a pre-cursor to some payment system.
Ev Williams of Twitter has made the statement “We don’t have any specific plans for a payment system, though that’s interesting,” he said. “But we definitely are striving for (and believe we can achieve) a built-in revenue model that is compatible with the open nature of Twitter and its ecosystem, rather than something tacked-on.”
The prediction is for Twitter to announce a payment system for integration to its ecosystem by end of March 2009.
