As the leader in OS systems sold for PCs Microsoft is only competing against itself, but in an effort to give the world a reason to move from XP to a new OS that isn't Apple or Linux Microsoft will ramp up the PR machine full tilt.
With a holiday release and year end tech budgets, plus the lack of an upgrade path and maybe the beginning of the end of a recession, PC purchases which had been put off in 2007 and 2008 will finally be due and Microsoft might have the chance to announce by March 2010 that they hit "a milestone."
They will likely announce it like a movie's opening and ongoing sales, though not required for the prediction, that in the first X days/weeks/months "Windows 7 has sold more OS than any other OS of all time" or "Windows 7 is the fastest selling OS of all time with X copies sold faster than any other OS."
If more clarification is needed...just ask.
