Get ready for the Nintendo DSi. The new gaming console goes on sale in the U.S. on April 5. It retails for $170 and comes in two colors: matte black and matte blue

Pre-orders on Amazon for the new handheld, which is thinner and features built-in cameras and SD card slot, is already listed in the top 20 bestsellers. Wal-Mart has already stocked up on "tens of thousands" of DSi. In Japan, DSi sales topped 535,379 in its first month. Nintendo sold more than 600,000 DSs in the U.S. in the first 19 days of its June 2006 launch.

Prediction: Nintendo hits U.S. sales of 700,000 or more for the DSi in April. This prediction will be judged on NPD's monthly report, which tracks U.S. sales only.

UPDATE: This prediction was deemed unjudgeable -- NPD does not break out DSi figures in its monthly report. All open bets were reimbursed on June 16, 2009. If you have any questions, please email Managing Editor Ian Lamont at ian@thestandard.

The DSi also occupied a large part of the speech, with Iwata mentioning that GameStop is reporting more pre-orders on the hardware than they had with the DS Lite, and more preorders were made through Amazon than any other game console in the online retailer's history. Two million units have been sold in Japan since last November.

Over 300K sold in launch weekend in US to gamers! Numbers for retailers should be MUCH higher!

@TIS, we may have an issue with judgment on this prediction as NPD has just confirmed that it will not breakout DS vs DSi sales.

Another potential source would be Nintendo itself. Would that be a suitable replacement for NPD?

@Ian, the only issue would be that the prediction judgment will be held indefinitely should no such announcement is made (by NPD, Nintendo, etc). Also, Nintendo may report metric such as 1st 30 days (which would be April 5-May 4) which cannot be readily used for judgment. In short, there is no guarantee that there will data that can be used to judge this.

From Nintendo press, 435,000 sold in first week (Apr 5-April 11) which break down to:

300,000 April 5-6 (2 days)
135,000 April 7-11 (5 days)

Will it sell an additional 265,000 in the 19 days following the first week?

David: Wow, that's quite impressive. Looks like Nintendo has a hit on its hands. I haven't bet on this prediction, but if the sales keep up the momentum, the prediction looks like it could pass. Of course, the recession may take a bite out of that.

Kind of related news: Last week, I asked Nintendo what they thought of the iPhone/iPod Touch as a competitor. You can read the response here:

Nintendo insists the iPhone isn't a competitor

@Ian, it was no surpised that it was going to be a hit. Prior indications on pre-orders from multiple retailers already confirmed that. It was sheer luck that Nintendo publishes the 1week sales info for DSi. There is no guarantee that it will for the month of April.

Nintendo released some data today relating to sales of the DS family, but I did not see DSi sales broken out for the month of April:

http://www.thestandard.com/news/2009/05/06/nintendo-posts-soaring-profit...

The interesting bit in the story was here:

"The company sold 26 million Wii consoles during the year, with overall totals crossing 50 million since 2006. It sold 31 million DS units, pushing the lifetime total since 2004 to 100 million units. The company sold 197 million DS games and 204 million Wii games."

However, the article says that Nintendo predictions that DSI sales will drop slightly in the year to come. That seems a little odd, considering they have a new product out.

Because of the issue that David brought up, this prediction cannot be judged. All open bets will be reimbursed today.
