In its 10Q filing, Microsoft reports that sales from the Zune digital music player in its second quarter of fiscal 2009 dropped $100 million, or 54%, from the same period a year ago.
Microsoft had an ugly quarter. The software company announced its first ever companywide layoffs with 5,000 cuts while posting an 11% drop in quarterly profits amid weak demand for PCs. Apple, meanwhile, posted strong quarterly earnings thanks to iPod sales in Europe and Asia. The iPod raked $3.3 billion in revenue as compared to less than $100M for the Zune.
Forget hopes of a Zune phone. Maybe Microsoft will stop making the Zune altogether.
Prediction: Microsoft announces by May 31, 2009 that it will stop developing and selling the Zune.

Chicken Little, lol! Zune is part of Microsoft Live ecosystem as suggested by Ballmer at CES 2009. Zune will survive past end of May 2009.

Zune isnt going anywhere.
Long live Zune and going global this year.
I got an email from a Zune spokesman who indicated "progress" this year for both the Zune's hardware and software.
