There have been a lot of discussions about hardware improvements for the next-generation iPhone, but what about the iPod touch?

An increase in capacity is one obvious area for improvement, but a French source (described on AppleInsider) brings up another intriguing possibility: A camera for the iPod touch.

It's a natural fit. The iPod touch has a great photo viewing application, and the ability to use email or the Facebook app to share photos would be a huge hit. The rumored September release date makes sense, too -- that's when millions of students are getting ready to return to school with new gadgets to show off to friends.

Prediction: Apple will release a new iPod touch with a camera (still or video) by September 15, 2009. An announcement before September will be accepted, but Apple has to be specific about the date in the announcement.

This one will remain open. There was no WWDC announcement about an upgraded iPod (beyond the OS enhancements) but that doesn't mean there won't be a September surprise, before school starts.

Another analysis: The improvements are mostly software, not hardware, and Apple is not getting into specifics:

But the innards of the 3G S are definitely different. It is two grams heavier, according to Apple's spec sheet.

TechCrunch sources suggest an iPod Touch with a camera is in the works:

If this is true, it will be close -- two months is just a little over the deadline.

IMHO, if it is true, it is much more likely that this would be released before kids go back to school or college.

@Ian Agreed. Also note the dates of past Apple Events where new iPods were announced-

9/12/2006
9/5/2007
9/9/2008

Note the prediction closes on 9/14/2009. I am thinking this will have a favorable outcome.

Thanks Tay. I am going to spread this around to the other Apple predictions. It's very relevant, especially for the tablet predictions.

Judged, based on hardware update to iPod nano and release date announcement at today's Apple media event.

Judgement is premature and is incorrect. The prediction is for iPod Touch and not iPod Nano! There is yet to be indication of a camera on iPod Touch!

You are right, David. I need to determine how these can be undone. Sorry!

Ok so I went into best buy today and purchased an 8gb Ipod touch, should I open it or keep it on my desk till the 15th comes around to see if there is a camera or anything?

Open it. Jobs & co. made it clear that the camera was for the nano, not the touch -- and they don't like to spring surprises that would destroy the credibility of this huge marketing effort around the enhanced nano.
