The price of remnant advertising in the fourth quarter has dropped 48% from the same period a year ago, according to PubMatic's Q4 2008 report. (Remnant inventory refers to ads that a website's sales staff can't sell directly and sells at a deep discount through online ad brokers.) The average price of all unsold ad inventory on the Web in Q4 '08 was 26 cents compared with 50 cents a year ago.
Online ad prices has steadily fallen for the past five quarters, making it harder for publishers to grow revenue through online advertising and wreaking havoc on the ad network industry.
Prediction: The average price for unsold ad inventory will decline 35% in the first quarter of 2009 from the same period a year ago. Remnant ad prices was 37 cents in Q1 2008. Overall ad prices would need to drop to 24 cents or more to reach 35%. This prediction will be judged on PubMatic's Q1 2009 Ad Index report.

What is the best place to buy remnant banner inventory? It's been kind of difficult to find it. It doesn't seem like the ad networks really want to promote it.
Really? I'd check with RightMedia or AdBrite, which has a menu-option style of buying ads. I'd also look into ad optimizer Rubicon Project, which offers free tools on making the most of all your ad networks you use.
