Judgment on Dec. 1, 2008: This happened early, which the community got right. Adding all of the currently available apps logged at Mobclix, the total is over 10,000 apps. -- The Industry Standard
Original prediction: One of the most exciting developments of the iPhone and iPod Touch is the ability to download applications from a single place called the Apple App Store.
Since its launch in early July of 2008, the Apple App Store has been a financial success for Apple. On September 9 at Apple's "Let's Rock" event, Steve Jobs announced that there were about 3000 available applications at the Apple App Store.
Mobclix has stats on every application at the Apple App Store. As of October 11, there were a total of 4,093 applications (974 free, 3119 paid) and growing.
PREDICTION: Apple App Store will host at least 10,000 applications (free and paid) by end of 2008. Judgment will be made based on the metrics reported by mobclix.

Of course they'll break 10,000 apps by the end of this year and probably double that by the middle of next year. The main problems will be on how many duplicate apps there'll be and how will users be able to cut through all those thousands of apps trying to find one's of value. I spend hours looking and find it difficult to wade through what is available now. Maybe the App Store needs better cross-referencing or more categories like the top 50 selling apps for each type of app. Somehow the App Store seems cramped or something. I can't see enough apps at a time.
It's going to be tough on developers of apps that don't have large appeal but are still very useful. Their less than popular apps are going to get lost in the shuffle in no time at all. They're going to need help from other internet sites doing reviews on the many apps that will be popping up on a daily basis. Looks like there might even be a need for magazines doing reviews on all types of apps. 10,000 apps is a heck of a lot to wade through and I don't even want to think about 20,000.
As of 10/24/08, App Store count is at 6,548 with more than 2 months to go.
As of 10/30/08, App Store count passed 7,000 mark and currently stands at 7,083. At this rate, looks like an ROI early December.
As of 11/14/08, App Store count passed 8,000 mark and currently stands at 8,086.
What a surge! At this writing, moblix indicates that App Store has passed the 9,000 mark and stands at 9,043.
Heads up,
The links for "stats" and "metrics" do not point to the correct page.
@Lakisha, thanks for the heads-up. As part of their site enhancement, mobclix decided to change the URL to the stats and metrics page to http://mobclix.com/appstore/
@TIS, can you make the change to the URL for stats and metrics in the prediction body to point to the new URL?
mobclix has made a correction to its metric. It is now standing around 8900.
As of this writing, mobclix is reporting a count of 9834 applications! The 10K mark will be hit before Thanksgiving!

10,000 iPhone Applications all on one page!

@TIS, 10K was reached on the eve of Thanksgiving Day. On Thanksgiving Day, it stood at over 10,100 and as of this writing, there are over 10,500 applications! This prediction has come true and can be judged.
