The first iPhone was released on June 29, 2007. The second-generation model, iPhone 3G, was released on July 11. Now rumors are buzzing that the next-generation iPhone is on its way for 2009.
The supersleuths at MacRumors uncovered a line of code slotted for the iPhone 2,1 in an iPhone firmware update. The original iPhone was referred to as "iPhone 1,1" and the iPhone 3G was dubbed "iPhone 1,2."
Bloggers are guessing that the next-gen iPhone 2,1 will have some significant hardware features beyond a 32GB model such as a longer battery life, pullout keyboard or a better camera.
This prediction is being timed around the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, which has not been set. The iPhone 3G was introduced at the WWDC on June 9, 2008 last year and went on sale about a month later.
Prediction: Apple will announce a new model of the iPhone by June 15, 2009.

@Yi-Wyn, I believe the closing date of Mar 1 is an error. It should be sometime between June 1 and June 15.

This is a very misleading article title.
Apple did not announce anything.
Putting a question mark at the end of the title is a very poor way to mask your effort to lure traffic to your site.

Can't wait to get it, hopefully it has more than just a storage bump to 32GB.

Theres no way apple would even consider adding a slot keyboard. its against what the iphone stands for.
Now a higher pixel cam can happen, an "apple" video recorder app is a given then maybe they'll finally introduce MMS messaging (sending videos) along with the standard SMS (texting). Better graphics chip definitely. even louder speakers, along with Talking GPS either merged into The Maps app or separate software. I love the iphone but the people at apple are some sneaky bastards. there are standard features that has been in other phones for years that apple fail to have in thier phones until they upgrade tempting you to buy their newer better phones with features that should have been there in the first place. ::sigh:: and like the dummy i am i will be getting this next iphone release. good thing i didnt get a 3G, this is going to be the major upgrade thats a must have. I'd also like to note that these other phone companies still cant touch the sophistication and smoothness of the iphones touch screen interface. no other phone is as smooth and response. not even blackberry's new touch phone. Thats one major reason why i still root for iphone. just cant down its functionality. Maybe Nokias N97 will be up to par? guess we'll have to wait and see.

Why would anybody get the Iphone 2nd gen now when the 3rd gen is on the way...I say no
Apple, unlike most companies has been notorious for NOT announcing new or upcoming products. Most other companies that do this ruin their sales for "current' product line since as any human would...people wait for the newest product...Take Palm for example in one of the releases for a previous "new" platform...they absolutely KILLED their sales for that quarter after they announced a new product coming...since people waited until the new product was released.
Although this is not 100% customer friendly since we get upset that we just got something and a new version came out right after...this is how Apple stays strong year in and year out for sales and driving up hype and anticipation!
A successful yet not totally customer friendly approach, but it stays true to Apples glow and sets them apart from any other company...
Honestly, if they announced today that in June there would be a 3rd Gen iPhone..who would go out and buy a iPhone 3G knowing the next best thing it right around the corner? NO ONE
I think we all know a new model of the iPhone will be announced soon. For purposes of the prediction, the question is when. Here are the arguments pro and con in a nutshell-

While Apple has sometimes announces new products or next-generation products outside of major events, it would be unusual for Apple to not have something new to show off at WWDC, especially since Macworld in January was relatively limited in the hardware department. Also, having so many developers in the audience is pretty crucial to generating interest and getting the creative juices flowing for such gadgets.
Two questions remain in my mind, though:
1) Would new hardware shown off at WWDC be an updated iPhone or a completely new device, such as an e-reader or tablet or netbook?
2) Steve Jobs is scheduled to return in late June, after WWDC. Will he be involved in the announcement or launch of new products, and if so, will he want to personally handle a new iPhone or other device?

This is old news. People have already talked to the makers of the new 3rd generation iphone. It's gonna have.

Judged. It's not as radical as some of the rumors and predictions suggested, but the iPhone 3GS definitely brings some hardware improvements, including a video-capable camera and better battery life:

@Ian, what proof that this is listed as iPhone 2,1? I believe this judgment may be premature. If iPhone 3GS is iPhone 3,0 then judgment rendered is wrong.
