Could Apple be building a four-core iPhone? Rumors began spilling out of CES that Apple is working on a multi-core iPhone to run more powerful and graphics-intensive apps like games and movies.
Imagination Technologies, a British mobile chip maker in which Apple owns a minor stake, introduced the PowerVR SGX543, its latest GPU unit at the Las Vegas show. The new multi-core chip is designed for mobile phones to run HD-quality video and graphics better. The current generations of the iPhone and iPod Touch use an older model of Imagination's graphics chips.
Apple analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray predicts that the company's next big projects are mobile-phone related. If that is the case, it makes sense that Imagination Technologies's SGX chip could make its way into a future generation of iPhones.
Prediction: Apple announces the company will be using a multi-core chip designed by Imagination Technologies in 2009. An announcement from Imagination Technologies that Apple will run its quad-core chip will be sufficient for this prediction to be judged a success.

@Yi-Wyn, nice prediction. This will most certainly be true if iPhone HD is in the works (which many believe is). Given that Apple has increased its ownership stake in the Imagination, this is a question of when.

Apple announces an SDXC-capable product by end of 2009
iPhone HD or iPod Touch HD becomes available by end of September 2009
How about a quad-core.
Yup. A quad-core, or four-core, is what Apple is rumored to be building.
That was a bit of sarcasm Yen, a little tongue n' cheek if you will. It's about time those phones had longer battery life.
What do you mean? A 2-hr battery life for an iPhone works for me. ;)
My God...I'd be happy with a simple 32gb iPhone...How many new iPhone predictions have there been for a new version in late 2008 and now in 2009. I for one am sick to death of waiting. I went and signed up for the new HTC yesterday and will just keep my 30gb iPod...
Job done!

Next-generation Cortex-A9 processor from ARM will debut in 2010 which will initially have dual cores.
Are people speculating that it's for the iPhone?
I am waiting for someone to crack open a iPhone 3G S later this week to see what kind of chip is powering it. I assume it's a higher-speed version of the chip that powers the 3G.
