It's no secret that Time-Warner is preparing for a formal spinoff of its giant Internet company, AOL. Last week, Time Warner's CEO asked analysts to treat the companies as separate entities, and for months AOL chief executive Tim Armstrong (pictured) has been restructuring the company in preparation for the day when AOL will be set on its own course as a publicly traded company.

The question is: When will that happen? Unnamed sources cited by AllThingsD's Kara Swisher say that the spinoff will occur within the next month, pending regulatory approval. Will regulators give AOL the green light within that period?

Prediction: Before December 11, 2009, AOL is formally spun off from Time Warner following approval from regulators. An announcement from AOL or Time Warner, or an official confirmation described in a mainstream business publication by the end of the day on December 10, will serve as criteria for judgment.

Does a majority shareholders vote meet the criteria or must there be formal regulatory approval?

This was an official confirmation, so it suffices.

The press release makes does not come out and say all of the required approvals are granted, but judging by past comments from Armstrong and others saying that they were waiting for federal approval, it seems that they got the nod from the feds they were looking for.
