Briefly: Patent office declines Dell's trademark of "cloud computing"

The US Patent and Trademark Office has denied an application by Dell to trademark the term "cloud computing." According to Sam Johnston, the USPTO has declared "cloud computing" a generic term that is "incapable of functioning as a source-identifier for applicant's services."

The ruling is officially titled a "non-final determination", which leaves open the option for Dell to appeal the ruling, but a brief look at the Trademark Office's ruling suggests Dell doesn't have much ground to stand on.
