Kindle is #1 consumer electronics device on Amazon -- maybe

Amazon.com's e-book reader, the Kindle, is the "most wished for" and top-selling consumer electronics item on Amazon. Now, it doesn't hurt that the Kindle has top billing on the Amazon front page, but it is surprising that the $359 device is the best selling on the entire site -- until you look at the other items on the bestselling list.

In the top 25 best selling electronics items, there are four Garmin Nüvi GPS units, four iPods, three Flip cameras and five Canon PowerShot digital cameras. Would the Kindle still have top billing if all those devices that are broken out by color and size were combined into one category? Maybe, but if not, it's a little disingenuous of Amazon to tout it's signature electronics product -- even if they are very proud of it.

Missing from the ebullient press release? Any sort of sales numbers for the Kindle, which is what we -- and Wall Street -- really want to see.

(Screenshot from Valleywag)

More news, commentary, and predictions from The Industry Standard:

Prediction: Amazon abandons the kindle

Analysis: Independent gaming could flourish on the iPhone

Special Feature: Where are they now? The Industry Standard tracks down 10 dot-coms from the Web bubble of the late 1990s
