We are the world? Facebook poised to overtake MySpace in worldwide traffic

The new comScore numbers show a slight dip in traffic for both MySpace and Facebook. That is no surprise, February is a shorter month. The real story is that Facebook seems poised to overtake MySpace in total worldwide traffic shortly as Silicon Alley Insider points out.

In January of this year, Facebook had 100.7 million unique visitors worldwide. In the same time period, MySpace had 109.3 million. What’s significant is that just one year ago, MySpace had four times the amount of uniques as Facebook. Had MySpace grown at the same pace as Facebook this past year, they would have around 400 million uniques right now rather than 109.3 million. That’s probably unreasonable, but shows how quickly Facebook is gaining.

The chart below (again, from Silicon Alley Insider) shows that Facebook has already passed MySpace in terms of average daily visitors worldwide. This, added with the rapid closing of the overall gap certainly seems to indicate a changing of the guard for the top worldwide social network very soon.

Also, check out our post on the significant new features coming to Facebook, including more privacy controls and chat.
