Vyatta says open source router scales to 10G

Vyatta, a maker of Linux-based routers, this week said its software scales to 10 Gigabit Ethernet, providing enterprises and service providers with an open source alternative to proprietary routers for high-performance requirements.

Scalability tests were performed using IBM servers and 10 Gigabit Ethernet cards from Neterion. The 10 gigabit performance was achieved using an IBM System X3550 server and a Neterion Xframe E 10 Gigabit Ethernet card.

Vyatta says customers can buy entire 10 gigabit-configured x86 devices for a fraction of what other vendors developing proprietary systems charge just for the card. The company says a combination of its software with an IBM x3550 platform costs as much as 75% less than a functionally comparable Cisco 7200 series router.

Vyatta says its Linux-based routing software has been downloaded more than 100,000 times over the past year.

Neterion participates in Vyatta's Ready partner program.
