Well, apparently there's no escaping Facebook.

In fact, there's no escaping Gmail or YouTube either because thanks to Logic Eastern, a company that describes itself as one "that undertakes R&D" to "indigenously provide necessary equipment" to facilitate "convergent technology", all three services will now be available for access on TV.

According to a story published by Business Standard, Logic Eastern has introduced new patented set-top boxes that let you access Facebook, Gmail and YouTube from your Television without adedicated Internet connection. In fact, the company claims, you can exploit this service without having to pay anything over your regularcable bill.

The Business Standard story explains the process behind thetechnology: Logic Eastern has set up a number of servers which will download data from the aforementioned Web sites on behalf of the users.Thereafter using already existing cellular technology, the servers will push the data to the consumers' TV sets. The end users can navigate the sites using a remote designed for that purpose but the company says that they will soon be making Wi-Fi keyboards also available.

Currently these set-top boxes are available in South Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Nagpur, Bhubaneshwar and Jammu.

While using the cellphone is only the first step in bringing out the latent value in these cable networks, what is truly exciting is the ability to use wireless mesh networks for the return path. This would make traditional networks offer services very close to those of IPTV without needing any upgrade in cable networks.
Other then technology, perhaps far more important is the initiative by the company to get the alliance partners that will provide exceptional offers an discounts making this platform truly beneficial to the subscribers.
In spite of the getting the alliances, technology and the software for enabling TV commerce, it remains to be seen how the subscribers adopt this new way of doing things.
