Brits have started their online Christmas shopping already, says eBay.

The online auction site has reported a 240 percent increase in the amount of tinsel being purchased on the site, while sales of Christmas cards are up 191 percent with five packs of cards sold every hour, despite there still being 191 shopping days until Christmas.

eBay also revealed that one artifical Christmas tree is currently sold on the site every three minutes, while Christmas stocking sales have risen by 129 percent.

"We've been surprised to see so much Christmas shopping happening on the site so early in the year. The Summer is still in full swing and already we're looking forward to Christmas," said eBay spokesperson, Julia Hutton-Potts
