Federal CIO Vivek Kundra, who had taken leave after an FBI raid on his former office at the District of Columbia's IT department, has been reinstated, according to a White House spokesman who emailed the Standard on Tuesday night.

“Mr. Kundra has been informed that he is neither a subject nor a target of the investigation, and has been reinstated," wrote White House spokesman Nick Shapiro. The raid and investigation were focused on Yusuf Acar, a former subordinate of Kundra's.

In addition, Shapiro waved aside concerns raised by gossip site Valleywag that Kundra had pleaded guilty to a minor theft charge in 1997.

"Twenty years ago, Vivek committed a youthful indiscretion," Shapiro said. "He performed community service and we are satisfied that he fully resolved the matter."

Ignoring the fact that 1997 was actually twelve years ago, not 20, the Associated Press reports an interesting twist in Kundra's theft case:

It could not immediately be learned from court records what Kundra stole. Gary Cranford, supervisor at the Maryland District Court records center in Annapolis, Md., said the paper case file, which would contain such details, was not in the box that was supposed to contain it. Neither Cranford nor court officials in Rockville were able to locate the file Tuesday.

But what matters most is that President Obama won't be asking for Kundra's resignation. That will be a relief to many in the Beltway area who have widely praised Kundra's performance in both public and private sectors.
