Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent a company-wide email saying that he will be taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June, according to an Apple media advisory.

In the email, Jobs wrote "during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought." The email said he wished to take himself out of the public spotlight in order to focus on his health.

Earlier this month, Jobs said that a "hormonal imbalance" had caused him to lose weight last year.

In his absence, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook will oversee the company's day-to-day operations. However, Jobs said he would "remain involved in major strategic decisions" while he is on medical leave.

Apple watchers put Tim Cook at the top of the short list of contenders to succeed Jobs as Apple CEO.

This was unexpected but it is somewhat in-line with the fact that Steve needs to get his personal affairs in order. I had submitted a suggestion that Steve may actually relinquish the CEO role so that he need to commit to the day-to-day responsibilities.

This quote is in line with the American Cancer Society, "The overall five-year relative pancreatic cancer survival rate for 1995-2001 was 4.6 percent."

On average, people can't be cured of pancreatic cancer, they can survive it on a limited timeline. It's sad to see this happen to such a historical figure in the business world. It's sad to see it happen to anyone.

I meant to say "doesn't need" instead of "need" in 1st comment.
