IndieGoGo , the online social marketplace that connects filmmakers and fans, is celebrating its first anniversary this month and has a lot to show for it.
Sometimes called the "Kiva.org of film," the site helps filmmakers promote their films with a website and online widgets, as well as raise funds.
Two films that have used IndieGoGo as a promotional tool will be screened at Sundance next week. Another film that has used IndieGoGo, Tapestries of Hope, has raised more than $20,000 through the site. In total, 1000 projects from more than 50 countries are using the site.
More than $80,000 have been raised through IndieGoGo, Slava Rubin the company's chief of strategy and marketing, told The Industry Standard.
"Some projects are getting more than 50% of their funding from people that they don't really know," Rubin said. "It's surprising, the connections that are made."
The company takes a 9% cut from the funds fans donate to films.
A few weeks ago, IndieGoGo also established a presence on Facebook by becoming a Facebook Connect partner, which lets Facebook users log into IndieGoGo without creating a separate account. The company has also released a Facebook application.
