In most laptops, the display uses more electricity than any other component. New guidelines by the Mobile PC Extended Battery Life Working Group (EBL WG) should help engineers measure and compare laptop displays' power consumption. In the long run, this could reduce consumption and improve battery life.
Founded in 2002, EBL WG is an industry organization that establishes guidelines for measuring laptop battery issues. Its member companies include Acer, Dell, Lenovo, and Toshiba. EBL WG has asked the Video Electronics Standards Association to ratify the new guidelines as a standard.
The new guidelines, a revision of the 2003 originals, include directions for setting up a lab, step-by-step instructions for testing displays, and support for CCFL and LED backlights. In theory, at least, they should help engineers determine which displays are the most power-efficient, and therefore worth emulating.
