At roughly 3PM Pacific today, Yahoo Messenger went down for some accounts. A number of Twitter users have noted the outage -- including the Yahoo Messenger Twitter account which noted just before 3 o'clock that maintenance was being performed:

Msgr users: we're doing some maintenance starting @ 3pm PT some users may notice some hiccups for several hours. Don't worry it's temporary

It seems odd that the company would perform maintenance at this time of day, unless it was something very urgent. I've reached out to my contacts at Yahoo to find out what's going on and will update when I learn something.

Update 5:08PM Pacific: A Yahoo spokesperson gave me this statement:

Due to an unplanned power equipment issue at one of Yahoo's third-party co-location facilities, a small portion of Yahoo! services and features may be temporarily unavailable. Our provider is working expeditiously to complete the maintenance, which we expect to last a few hours.

Yahoo told me that most services from the co-lo have been shunted to the company's other facilities. However, the company also noted that most of the users running into issues are running older versions of the Yahoo Messenger client, and that upgrading to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 would solve the connectivity problems.

Update 02:06AM Pacific: The Yahoo Messenger blog notes that the maintenance (if your service goes down because of a power outage, is it really "maintenance" to bring it back up?) was completed at 11:42PM Pacific and service has been returned to normal. I, for one, can now log in normally.

Earlier this week, users had problems connecting to Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger during a "service disruption".

Seeing the same problem on Adium. Still cannot connect.

Maintenance for Adium users only? That smells fishy. I got the maintenance message just now and switched to the official YM for Mac (3.0 beta), and that works just fine. Thanks Yahoo!

Down on meebo as well. And their webmail is down also.

pidgin is also down for ubuntu

I can connect on Trillian/XP but none of my contacts are shown as online.

Mail also is out for me. Here's the error message:

Can't talk now. System's down.

Sorry for the holdup. Looks like a temporary glitch in our network has part of Yahoo! mail down, so you're briefly without service. Rest assured the alarms are blaring in the basement and our team is working frantically to get you up and running ASAP. Again, the snag is on our end — so there's no need for you to do a thing.

Here is the message I just got when trying to access my Yahoo mail account, at about 9:25 PM EST:

Mail Home - Help Can't talk now. System's down.

I noticed this too, that if I downloaded Yahoo 3 for the Mac, it worked fine. :P

I still can't login through Adium (though I can login on my BlackBerry via JiveTalk):

"Error: Error resolving scs.msg.yahoo.com: nodename nor servname provided, or not known"

Same for me too.

All day monday 12-08-08 and tonight.. Still can't log into Yahoo Mail.
Is it just me? This sucks.

MEast, I'm having the same issue with Trillian tonight (Monday Dec 10), and checking my Trillian logs, it shows I was disconnected Friday at about 6 PM (CST). I've not been able to successfully reconnect (if you look in the status window), though the icon for that account indicates online. And of course since I'm not really connected, I have no contacts. I refuse to install the modern versions of Yahoo Msgr. Bleh.
