The ease of use with which Google Friend Connect is implimented on a website or a blog - THAT is what will make it powerful (once they give us APIs to combine the two userlists).

Plus the fact that it will connect various and sundry websites and follow the people around. Google, being the 800lb gorilla, but a good gorilla so far, has a very good shot at establishing a decent userbase for Google Friend Connect once they get a few more gadgets open.

But the basics are there now: Add a friend, post a comment, rate a page. A lot of blogging software and even a lot of websites and Content Management Systems do not offer exactly those three features. A lot of CMS's have poor or no membership systems. Google is smart for implementing those features often lacking on a a lot of websites.

Others have does similar things (MyBlogLog, some of the co-commenting attempts, all very admirable), but Google has the best shot at putting it together. will it make a dent in MySpace/Facebook/etc? It may, it may not - hard to say. But it will be a lot of fun just the same!
