(Updated) An unknown number of users with Yahoo Mail accounts have experienced problems with the Web-based service this afternoon.

In the past two hours, there have been more than 100 twitter messages (see below) describing email outages or other issues with their Yahoo accounts, including being unable to use Yahoo Messenger or the Yahoo address book.

Yahoo Mail had more than 263 million users as of May 2008. Gmail, another popular Web-based mail service, had only 90 million users.

The Standard has contacted Yahoo's press office for comment, but has yet to receive a reply.

Update: A Yahoo spokesman has issued the following statement to The Industry Standard:

“Yahoo! experienced a disruption in service earlier today that affected users in some geographic areas. We’ve addressed the issue and full service is now available. We apologize for any inconvenience."
