"Despite what popular pundits may think, virtual worlds and UGC don't always blend well. They are not peanut butter and chocolate, they are caramel and fish. You need a clever chef. Worse still, if Lively was to be built on UGC, it launched with almost no tool set for making UGC, and despite that limitation, was immediately subject to UGC's bugaboo -- new users saw the most popular rooms had sexual themes."

While Google Lively failed, other online virtual worlds continue to gain in popularity.
A fun new one worth checking out is Hangout.net-- which lets teens build their own online rooms, meet and interact with friends there, fill the rooms with virtual versions of online brands/products.
Sponsorships from the brands will pay for these free rooms. The 3D virtual rooms are very realistic-- CTO came from MIT. www.hangout.net
