eMusic has passed the 250 million MP3 download milestone since establishing its current subscription model five years ago. The number includes sales in the US, Canada and Europe.

iTunes competitor eMusic describes itself as the world's largest retailer of independent music and the world's second-largest digital music service, with Apple holding the number one position. eMusic sells music in high-bitrate MP3 format, and without DRM restrictions.

eMusic currently offers over 4.5 million tracks, many of them from independent labels. Rather than selling songs "a la carte," as the iTunes Store does, eMusic sells subscriptions, offering users a fixed number of songs per month.
