The next time Microsoft Corp. updates its Office suite, its flagship programs will run in a Web browser. Some details:

— Web versions coming for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

— Microsoft pledges to have them work in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.

— Fewer bells and whistles than desktop versions, but very similar design. Documents should look the same in the browser as they do on the desktop.

— Multiple users can edit the same document simultaneously.

— Free for consumers; business license agreement details to be determined.

— Launch date unknown, but expected by end of 2009 or early 2010.
