(Updated) The New York Times website and other sites that belong to the New York Times company are continuing to grow their audiences, and collectively had 50 million unique visitors in September, according to Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., the chairman and publisher of the New York Times Company.

Among newspaper companies, that is a very large number. Several months ago, the Los Angeles Times reported 19 million unique visitors to the LA Times website in July, which generated 127 million page views. Sulzberger did not say how many page views the nytimes.com, boston.com, and about.com had received in September.

"The New York Times Company ... is now the 11th most visited parent company on the Web in the United States," he said, adding that his company had a reach that represented 30% of the online audience in the United States.

Sulzberger made the comment at his keynote speech during the WebbyConnect conference in Laguna Niguel, California.

Update: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the unique visitors were only for the nytimes.com.

Comments

Traffic good. Revenue bad.

September highlights:
- Revenue down 8%
- Ad revenue down gut-wrenching 13%
- Circulation revenue + 3% (price increase)
- Classifieds down a horrifying 28%

One bright spot:
- This fall actually not as bad as June, July, and August (-18%)
- Online revs up 12%, driven by About.com (+11%)
- Online ad revs up 14%
- Sadly, the online revenue growth is a major deceleration. Also, online revenue unfortunately still accounts for 12% of overall revenue.
