Oddly enough, today's release of the Android code was announced ahead of time at the Google Developer Day in Bangalore, India. At the same conference Google made another announcement that Java will soon be supported on Google App Engine (GAE).
Control Enter believes that the move will be timed to counter Microsoft Strata, but the explanation is probably far simpler: Java is one of Google's key languages, with Android itself running on Dalvik, Google's home-rolled JVM. It's a logical step for Google to add Java to GAE, giving developers an all-Google environment to have apps run on Android as well as the Web.

Google will always be a niche player as long as they don't use .NET!
