As if financial customers weren't skittish enough, now Bank of America customers are unable to log into the bank's online banking site. Upon clicking the "Sign In" link on the front page of BankofAmerica.com, users are typically redirected to "https://sitekey.bankofamerica.com" to further authenticate themselves. That server is up, but users are unable to make a secure connection to it -- something that you generally want to have when you're talking about financial information.
The site has been broken since around 11AM Eastern time -- almost 5 hours so far. UPDATE: Now, my Bank of America login has been replaced by the image at above left. I can no longer even attempt to log in.
Update 2: The main BankOfAmerica.com site won't load for me, but I was able to access my online banking data through a backdoor of sorts. By searching Google for "Bank of America" I found an "Online Banking" link that got me into my data.
Update 3: Everything seems to be back to normal now.
Several related terms are high on the list of popular searches at Google's Hot Trends site. I've asked for comment from Bank of America, but haven't heard back yet.
Bank of America spokeswoman Tara Burke gave me this statement:
We are experiencing a temporary systems issue that is resulting in sporadic interruption of online banking service. We expect to have the situation corrected shortly. It does not affect customer information, only their ability to access it. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Wow, I've been searching the web for information all morning as to why I can't access my account, and this is the first mention I've seen. At first, you could open www.bankofamerica.com, but then the subsequent Sitekey page was down, preventing login to online banking - during that time, there was no information posted on the bank's homepage, almost as if someone was either asleep at the wheel, or the bank was trying to hide something. At this point, the entire domain of www.bankofamerica.com is down, and has been for at least an hour. Their comment above about this being "temporary" is completely bogus. What a horrible time to have your website go down. In the middle of this financial mess, it could easily be construed that the company has suffered some catostrophic failure. This is really lame - I'm wondering how many years of downtime their IT department just burned through per their SLAs. This also points to key flaws in the internet as a means of staying on top of developments - that bank's website has been down all day and there hasn't been a single peep online until now. What's going on???
Urgent! Recent sharp statements from Bank of America. I am totally at a loss!

While the site was down, I was able to access my account by phone and withdraw cash. At least twitter was up the whole time.
BoA site is up and running as usual, what is all this fear mongering about?
BEWARE! Comments from Steeve with a link to tubedirect.net goes to a page that tries to automatically install malware.
If it was accessible from a search engine link while at the same time not from your browser directly, chance are it was just bad DNS or some DNS-related issue that took 5 minutes to fix, and several hours for the internet DNS servers to catch back up to. Nothing to see here... move along.
Really, this is news? A web site goes off-line for a few hours? Rather than panicking, you could always be like BofA Customer above and call them. There number is on the back of your ATM card. This just in, I couldn't log into MS Messenger a few minutes ago... time to sell all your stock in MS and storm the Redmond campus!
Absolutely it is news. This isn't just a simple "website", or program like MSN Messenger. This is something used by millions of people every day to access their financial accounts -- something that Bank of America touts as a really handy service. To have it be down for several hours during the day -- to paying customers, not some free service like an IM program -- and have people be unable to access their financial information is absolutely worth writing about.
OH NOES!!!! EVERYBODY PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha, seriously, cut the net admin a break! Sometimes sites have to go down for a few hours for maintenance. There are other ways to check your balance, like calling the number on the back of your card.
Anyone who views this as a catastrophy or a sign Bank of America is going down has never had their own website. Don't worry so much guys! Maybe we have gotten spoiled by technology if this is even an issue. It wasn't too long ago that you'd have to actually drive to the bank to check your balance or do any transactions...
Employees of Bank of America told about the true reasons why the Bank of America Online Banking not "online" anymore
http://tubedirect.net/index.php?q=Bank-of-America-not-online
This all very suspicious!
Don't use the TubeDirect link above! It is a malware trap!
This smells like the OCC took the site down because the Microsoft IIS web servers were infected again and trying to infect everyone whom visited the site?
trying to log on now, and going in circles. It asks where are you (what state), you answer, and it takes you right back to the same page. Suspicious or just frustrating? Anybody else havingtrouble today?
I've been through all the issues like everyone else "not being able to loin to my acct". Now it says my account has been locked. What is going on and how do I get in?????
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE ABOVE INFO: ACCESSING THROUGH A "BACK DOOR". YOU SAVED MY DAY!!!
Looks Like its the same story today!
chill out people, it's technology. Thank God you don't have to do everything by hand anymore...
I had this happen to me all the time from 8pm onwards every night, completely out on week ends for several months now.
Calling them is my last recourse but then whats the point of online banking if you have to call people.
They keep on saying the online specialist are working on it....but they've been working on it for months now and I don't see any resolution..

If you get the unable to login at the site key page, the site is not down. try putting in the wrong pass code. The site recognizes it as in correct and gives the appropriate response, what is happening is a layer of security that recognizes the correct pass code but disallows your IP.
They haven’t figured out why yet.... perhaps more should complain.
I am really frustrated! I have been trying for 2 days to get my banking on line! What has happened?
