The Kansas Energy Council has scheduled two public hearings on proposals that include lowering the state's maximum speed limit.

The council is trying to decide what recommendations to make to legislators and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

The hearings are scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 19 at the Robbins Center at Fort Hays State University and at 9 a.m. Sept. 30 at the Marcus Welcome Center at Wichita State University.

The council is mulling over 15 recommendations, including ones to encourage research into new technology to generate electricity and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

But also on the list is a proposal to drop the maximum speed limit from 70 miles per hour to 65 miles per hour, as way to reduce fuel consumption.
