“If Gmail’s down for six hours, you can lose your job over that.” -- I think this certainly holds for larger enterprises. For smaller companies, this is a major headache, but the chances of a firing resulting from such an event are much smaller.
The SaaS model gives small companies a chance to operating its systems as a large enterprise, but without the infrastructure and training costs. Our company is a 5-person group, using Salesforce, GoogleMail, FogBuz, and outsourcing all of our server space and computing of a 2 TB database. These services put us in a position to scale more easily, but enjoy most of the conveniences of a larger enterprise, especially in regard to sales tracking and product development.
