Networking giant Cisco Systems has agreed to acquire an email startup called PostPath for $215 million.

To explain the acquisition, Cisco touts PostPath’s security, scalability and compatibility with other email solutionsthe Linux-based email service’s interoperability with Microsoft Exchange has been a selling point in the past. Cisco says it plans to incorporate the Mountain View, Calif. startup’s email and calendaring features into its WebEx software (acquired by Cisco last year), which is trying to move beyond video conferencing and become a more generally useful tool for collaboration.

PostPath raised a total of $30 million from JAFCO Ventures, Matrix Partners and Worldview Technology Partners. Competing startup Zimbra was acquired by Yahoo for $350 million last year.

It's going to get interesting as the battle brews between Cisco and Microsoft. Cisco just hit a sensitive 'Exchange nerve' at Microsoft. No love lost between these two is an understatement.
