Applications on the iPhone App Store can't be discounted according to one developer's Twitter feed.

Iconfactory, the minds behind the excellent Twitterrific Twitter client for Macs, introduced an iPhone/iPod Touch that was introduced for the App Store launch today.

In response to customer questions, the Iconfactory team Twittered "there cannot be any discounts for the App Store. Ask Apple why they won't let us do that."

Well, that's what I did! Of course, I didn't actually get through to someone at Apple PR -- they don't pick up their phones, natch -- but I did leave a message asking for comment.

So, unless Apple changes policy (which is possible if enough developers complain), we're all stuck paying full price for our iPhone apps.

And as I said in a follow-up tweet:

"Don't underestimate the difficulty of keeping 1000s of developers—and diverse payment systems—happy. Discounts are hard, but let them know."

Craig, what kind of discounts did you mean? Were you referring to something like discount codes that give you 10% off a particular application, for example?

If that's what you mean, I don't think offering that capability is too much to ask -- certainly something they should work on.

What's the big deal? Just price it the way you want to get paid. Idiots.

Because if you want to, for example, offer a discounted price to previous customers, you can't.
