AT&T Press Release Delivers Reality Check for iPhone Cravers

Yesterday, Steve Jobs delivered a keynote speech to kick off apple annual World Wide Developers Conference. As usual many rumors flooded the internet up till the very minute of the 10 o’clock delivery. It was expected that, as promised, Apple would deliver a 3G iPhone to consumers buy the end of 2008. The release is scheduled for July 11. Jobs went on to say that the phone is now starts only $199. What he failed to mention is that the 3G data plan will cost an additional $10 dollars per month above and beyond the current EDGE network. If you look below the phone is actually more expensive to own then it was before. In Job’s keynote he tried to play it off as if they were reducing the cost when in fact they were increasing total cost of ownership.

iPhone iPhone 3G
Price of Phone $399 $199
AT&T Base Plan $59.99 $69.99
Total Cost of Ownership w/2 year Contract (setup and taxes not included) $1,838.76 $1,878.76

Within hours of the keynote AT&T quietly made a press release in regards to the iPhone that revealed the new pricing information.
