Eco-Carbone is a French company that develops carbon credits for sale on international markets by trapping methane emissions from coal mines. Although based in Europe, it works with Chinese mining companies to collect the emissions, which are then used for energy.
The company is also growing Jatropha, a plant native to Central America that produces particularly oily seeds. The plant, although relatively unknown in the US, is being developed on several other continents as a promising feedstock for biodiesel.
The €2.1 million funding (about $3.2 million in US dollars) was provided by a private equity firm called Truffle Capital.
