HOUSTON -- Compaq Computer Corp. will offer a free Windows XP Home Edition upgrade to customers who purchase its Presario desktop and notebook personal computers beginning Sept. 1.

Compaq (CPQ) said Thursday that customers may order their free upgrade from the Web. The upgrade will be about one month after Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Oct. 25 unveiling of the operating system. At that time, Windows XP will be available pre-installed on all Compaq Presario PCs.

In April, Dow Jones reported that Windows XP wouldn't be in stores until
October, missing the back-to-school season and thereby hurting computer sales until the release.

Microsoft first announced plans to launch its Windows XP in May and said the operating system will be available in two editions: Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional Edition for businesses.
