I have to agree with David. First, and most important to the terms of the prediction, Apple did not announce a new mobile processor. Second, the processor in the iPhone 3G S is not the new processor alluded to in the background to the prediction, such as might be designed and manufatured by PA Semi or others, but merely a faster clock speed of the same processor.

Clearly, Apple DID NOT ANNOUNCE a new mobile processor during WWDC (judgment criteria). The confirmation from RapidRepair shows an UPDATED chip used as the main processor. Favorable judgment should now be rendered.

Readers: I am going to hold off on judging this one. While Phil Schiller did not mention a new processor by name at WWDC, he did announce that the hardware powering the iPhone 3G S would be "on average up to twice as fast." Engadget currently lists the processor for this device as unknown:

The question is whether this is an upgrade to the ARM or a completely new processor. I suspect the former, because Apple would never miss a high-profile chance to build buzz.

Apple does not announce a new mobile processor at WWDC 09?

A report in Forbes says that there is "no doubt" Apple is working on a mobile processor, citing the company's purchase of PA Semiconductor last April and other evidence, including its interest in hiring a developer with experience in the NEON extended instruction set used in ARM processors.

However, Forbes says analysts believe the company is many months away before any product based on a new mobile processor is ready. The article says if a new iPhone is announced at WWDC, "Apple will most likely turn to a faster version of the application processor it now buys from Samsung."

Prediction: Apple will not announce a new mobile processor for the iPhone or any other new Apple device at this year's World Wide Developers Conference, which runs from June 8 to June 12. For this prediction to be judged favorably, Apple must not mention any specific plans for a new (as opposed to updated) mobile processor. A bet against this prediction means you believe that Apple will announce a new chip to power the iPhone/iPod Touch or other Apple mobile device.
