BlackBerry Storm 2 sale date announced by May 31?

The BlackBerry rumor mill has been churning recently, with a sudden rush of reports of a Storm 2 coming to market sooner rather than later.

Earlier this month, a source told Slashgear that a new version of the Storm -- Research In Motion's answer to the iPhone -- would be released in September. Now, another anonymous source described in the Boy Genius Report claims that Verizon employees are undergoing Storm 2 training, and the device "could be released as early as this month," with an end-of-June release date at the latest.

Supposed photos of the device (see inset) have also cropped up on a BlackBerry fan site, but were removed "at RIM's Demand."

RIM is under pressure to have a strong competitor to the iPhone. While the first-generation Storm has sold well, there were complaints about functionality, including the touch screen.

Two other pressure points for Research In Motion: The upcoming Apple World Wide Developers Conference, which starts on June 8 and will feature some iPhone OS updates, and the just-announced Palm Pre, which will go on sale two days before WWDC starts.

Prediction: The release date for a BlackBerry Storm 2 device will be confirmed by Research In Motion or one of its wireless partners before May 31, 2009. The actual sale may start after that date.
