I am curious why Google does not make it easy to find out how many Android apps are out there. Too daunting for consumers to sort through, or is the company afraid of pundits making comparison with Apple's App Store?

Google announced their second developer challenge with submissions due by Aug. 31st. That means those that didn't make the cut will find their way to the market, and with no Apple like restrictions I think this target is still going to happen.

I am of the opinion that the count wont break 10,000 by Oct 1. That said, I am skeptical as to when there will be official report of Android Market application count. I have not been able to find a site that covers that except for Mobclix has a beta site for Android but it is not public yet.

For the prediction to be true, there would need to be an average of approximately 1000 applications/month since Jan to end of September (since there was less than 1000 applications by end of January 2009).

It took Apple about four months to reach 10,000 mobile developer applications after its Apple App store opened in July 2008. The Apple App store is still going strong.

Google's has gotten off to a much slower start. Its competing Android Market launched in October 2008, but developers could only upload free applications because the Android store didn't have a payment system. Google announced on Feb. 13 that mobile developers can now offer paid apps for Android, which will use Google Checkout for its payment and billing system.

Several cellphone makers like Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and HTC are expected to release new Android-powered phones this year.

Prediction: Google's Android Market will hit 10,000 applications by October 1, 2009.
