Microsoft will offer six versions of Windows 7: the Starter Edition, Home Premium, Home Basic, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate.

The Home Premium is the standard consumer package. Redmond exec Bill Veghte told ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley that this version, along with Windows Professional, will make up more than 80 percent of customers purchases.

Microsoft has not disclosed pricing for any of the Windows 7 versions yet. The company's Vista debacle has left some paying Microsoft customers bitter, who are calling for the software giant to give away Windows 7 for free. While noble, it's more likely that the software giant will introduce a reasonably-priced OS at launch.

Prediction: Microsoft will offer a suggested list price of $139 or less for Windows 7 Home Premium at launch. A favorable judgment includes a retail price of $139.99 or less.
