Microsoft announces it will shut down Zune?

In its 10Q filing, Microsoft reports that sales from the Zune digital music player in its second quarter of fiscal 2009 dropped $100 million, or 54%, from the same period a year ago.

Microsoft had an ugly quarter. The software company announced its first ever companywide layoffs with 5,000 cuts while posting an 11% drop in quarterly profits amid weak demand for PCs. Apple, meanwhile, posted strong quarterly earnings thanks to iPod sales in Europe and Asia. The iPod raked $3.3 billion in revenue as compared to less than $100M for the Zune.

Forget hopes of a Zune phone. Maybe Microsoft will stop making the Zune altogether.

Prediction: Microsoft announces by May 31, 2009 that it will stop developing and selling the Zune.
