I am expecting a target subsidized price between $199 and $249. Putting Palm Pre at $197 or less would cannibalize sales of all other Palm devices (i.e. currently Palm Treo 800w is $199 with contract).

Good point, but Palm needs this phone to turnaround its company. it needs to compete with a $197 iPhone, so matching that figure would make sense, especially since the Palm Pre will only be available on No. 3 wireless carrier Sprint at launch.

Palm seems to like 9s. I would be shocked if it sold anywhere for $99 or less (even $149 would be super tempting).

Pricing the Palm Pre will be key to Palm if it wants to compete with Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry Storm. The Palm Pre, a touchscreen smartphone with built-in BlueTooth, 8 GB of storage and built-in QWERTY, is expected to come out in the first half of 2009. Sprint is the Palm Pre's exclusive launch partner.

Apple offers the 8GB iPhone for $197 at Walmart if you are eligible for a 2-year AT&T contract.

RIM offers the BlackBerry Storm for $199 online with a 2-year Verizon contract.

Prediction: Palm will announce that the lowest-priced Palm Pre starts at $197 or less. Specific requirements such as a 2-year contract or an online rebate purchase will be judged favorably if it adds up to $197 or less. If the Palm Pre retails for $197.99, that will be judged as $197 not $198.
