This is THE big geek out party every year I love to follow. Every January, still groggy from the holidays, I'll pull out the trusty laptop (spread out on the couch) and reload the keynote a billion times on Engadget or TUAW. I'll do it again this year, but to think that Steve is done, and the Expo is, too, is hard to believe.

The entire tech news world stops in its tracks at every MW with bated breath. This doesn't make sense to me.

Here’s some big Apple news regarding the upcoming Macworld Expo that’s not a rumor: This will be Apple’s last appearance at Macworld and chief executive Steve Jobs will not be giving the keynote. Let me repeat: Steve Jobs will not be giving the keynote at the event that is traditionally Apple’s largest of the year.

Instead, on Tuesday January 6, 2009 we will see Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of product marketing, give the keynote. It’s likely impossible to mention this without re-starting the speculation about Jobs’ health and/or Apple having nothing major to unveil at the show.

One also has to wonder if this move means that Schiller is the heir-apparent to replace Jobs if and when he leaves Apple. Has he leapfrogged other potential successors like current Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook? Maybe that’s reading too much into it, but this is Apple’s biggest keynote of the year, and it’s Schiller who is being trusted to give it.

I’ve reached out to Apple for comment about this surprising turn of events. All it says in the press release is that “Apple has been steadily scaling back on trade shows in recent years, including NAB, Macworld New York, Macworld Tokyo and Apple Expo in Paris.”

Apple Announces Its Last Year at Macworld

CUPERTINO, California—December 16, 2008—Apple® today announced that this year is the last year the company will exhibit at Macworld Expo.
