Apple should go with China Unicom first, then China mobile will be anxious to be on board to carry iPhone, www.wirelessinput.com

That's the beauty of receiving money in red envelopes. You get enough new year's money, you can buy an iPhone for you and your friends.

Thanks for clarifying! Interesting.. and is the $$$ intended to be used a certain way? For instance, would it be ok to obtain that [possibly] newly released iPhone?

@Lev, a minor correction .. rather than exchange of gifts ...he young unwed ones receives $$$$$ from their elders and other relatives who are married in red packet envelopes. This is followed by binging on new year goodies and treats.

As an aside: Keep in mind that January 26 is the Chinese New Year, in 2009. It is an important holiday in their tradition, which practices include exchanges of gifts. :-)

@Eric, nice sleuthing there!

@Eric, nice sleuthing there! Technically, it doesn't make sense for Apple to create a non-GSM based iPhone. However, the sheer size of the China mobile market is just too big to ignore as well.

Apple announces Chinese iPhone launch by Feb 2009?

Judgment made on Feb. 2, 2009: The community has correctly predicted no announcement of a Chinese iPhone launch. For now, the tech-savvy Chinese will continue to buy their iPhone overseas and hack them to use back on the mainland. -- The Industry Standard

Original prediction: With the launch of the iPhone, Apple has become one of the most influential players in the wireless mobile market in the world.

Despite the iPhone being manufactured in China, Apple has failed to reach an agreement to launch its popular mobile phone there.

However, there is now some indication that Apple may have reached an agreement with China Mobile.

Predict: Will Apple will make a formal announcement of an iPhone launch in China by the end of January 2009?

Let the community decide. Place your bets below.
