I have a PS2,PS3,Nintendo

I have a PS2,PS3,Nintendo and XBox Elite with Falcon chipset. XBox has an external power supply and cables you trip over. My PS2 is over 8 years old and works fine. My XBox just RROD'd on me.
My PS3 is still purring along with an internal power suppy and the only thing it has external to it is a power cord and an HDMI cable. The XBox gets played the most in my family but the design sucks. No wireless, no Bluetooth, no BluRay and has an oversized external power brick etc. I've never tore into one under warrany but one could help the issue with better internal cooling and use of decent thermal compound. I just sent mine in for repairs so will wait to hear from them. Repair is free or 99.99?

My boys have had nothing but

My boys have had nothing but problems with their XBOX 360 from day one. But the XBOX isn't microsofts only piece of crap they've pawned off on consumers. My oldest son had to have the microsoft ZUNE for his birthday. After having it replaced three times by microsoft with a refurbished unit, not a new like we purchased, he finally gave up when this last one stop functioning for no reason and he went out and bought an IPOD touch. Their customer service sucks, but thats right I forgot they can't speak or understand clear english because they're not in this country, so Bill can make even more money on cheap services. The XBOX has crapped out again, what a surprise. Microsoft and Bill Gates can kiss my A$$ before I'll ever spend another dime on one of their lousy products!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am seriously sick of

i am seriously sick of microsoft. i had the rrod three times, and now my console freezes 10 seconds into gameplay.. and because its not the rrod i need to pay for repairs. This is BS because this was a refurb unit that was sent to me after the intial unit failed, then another, then another. Customer service is awful as well. They do not understand english, they speak broken english but do not understand english. All i want at this point is my money back and i doubt that will ever happen. i love the games, i love the online play but the hassles and wasted time and money associated with this thing are becoming too much. i am very disappointed with microsoft and my xbox. i would advise anyone looking into a gaming system to get a ps3. they have a better track record, same price, blu ray player and free online play. xbox is a waste at this point and now the warranty only covers rrod but yet they have automated repair hotlines for a laundry list of errors. i was wondering if anyone has any updates on the class action lawsuit because microsoft should be taught a lesson for producing a product with such a high failure rate.

I have had my Xbox 360 die

I have had my Xbox 360 die on me three times in the last 3 years and with out buying the extended service contract on it, I beleave it would have been a great hassel to send it off to get fixed all the time. I probably would have bot PS3 buy now. With that being said I am still going to buy a PS3, but I will continue to have and keep my 360 because I love it. Microsoft i beleave is doing the best they can to compete and also fix what they have brot out to the consumer in there 360. Look at the old Xbox, yeah it had some problems but everbody still bot the machine and had a great time with it. Dust and heat are the main contributors to the 360's RROD. Putting it ontop of a tv or on the carpet kills these things right away. So if poeple would give the 360 a little respect and put it on a safe cleaner space maybe there would be such a problem. I know every time I have had a problem its because of those things. Its not a socker or a football to kick around, the 360 is a tempamental piece of machinery. When turning of the machine DONT touch or try to move it until it cools and keep it clean.

I realize that my experience

I realize that my experience is not even close to as bad as that others have experienced. Nevertheless, it is important to add my experience to the fray.

I was one of the guys who was slammed by one of the big RROD problems caused by MS's software update on Oct 31, 2006. After several hours of customer service talking interspersed with plenty of hold time, they told me I had to pay $135 to get it fixed. They gave me no choice, and in the end I paid it.

I got a refurbished box in place of my 5 month old new box.

Eventually, due to the enormous number of people affected, Microsoft said they would retroactively extend the warranty to RROD problems to 3 years, and reimburse users previously affected by this. An admirable effort to mend customer relations.

But of course, this new box just broke today with the RROD problem, less than 3 years since I got the refurbished box. But Microsoft only extended the warranty to 3 years from the original purchase, not from the receipt of the new box.

An example would help. Lets say that I bought an XBox 8/1/2006. It broke down on 7/1/2009, and then MS sent a replacement free of charge since it was within the 3 year period. Then, the 'new' xbox breaks down 2 months later on 9/1/2009. Now you are stuck again with a defective product, having already wasted time with customer support the first time, now having to do it again, and this time they say you'll have to pay the fee since your xbox is now 'out-of-warranty'.

This makes no sense. If you make a defective product, you replace it with a working product, not a product that breaks down from the exact same cause in less time than it is supposed to be covered by the warranty.

This happened to me in reverse. My xbox broke down 5 months after i bought it, and the 2nd one broke down 2 years 10 months later.

Microsoft's supervisor of customer support was not helpful at all, sticking with what was obviously a script read from a computer screen, without any imagination or inclination to discuss anything other than his line about '3 years from original purchase date.'

Anyone out there thinking about getting an Xbox 360 - don't. The PS3 has a much better track record which will make the total cost of ownership less. Caveat Emptor, indeed.

Only fixes it for 3 years from date of purchase. That is like 135.00 a year you pay to play a game system for a year. Rip off!!

It's NOT free, it costs TIME

It's NOT free, it costs TIME and EFFORT. As a kid, those things are meaningless as kids have an excess of both (at least I did) but as an adult I have way more money than I have time. I am on my 4th, YES 4th, XBOX 360. Sure, M$ graciously replaced each one in a mere 6 weeks, so that's 1/2 a year cumulative "down" time. By the way, just went to play Fable2 today and bam, RROD. No way can I say this is "free" or acceptable.

I am so happy someone is

I am so happy someone is taking action against Microsoft. We got our 360 @ launch and the first time out of the box got the red ring. While Microsoft did fix it for free, we were without our gaming system for 4 weeks after anxiously waiting the release. A couple years later, the CD drive goes out to which MS said to send it back in (we pay shipping) and that for $120 they would fix it and we would pay shipping back. What a rip off! They stated it was because of the user that the drive went bad. Psh! We seriously considered burning the thing, but chose not to as we've spent hundreds on games just for the 360. We ended up fixing it ourselves for $30 so we could play the games that are exclusively for the 360.

Not more than a month with it back up and running, we turned it on one morning to again get the red ring.

I believe Microsoft is well aware of the problem THOUSANDS are having but still knowingly sell defective products. I mean- they wanted to charge us $120 for something that would cost them... what?.... $20??!?!

We, like many of you, are boycoting MS and sticking with PS and Nintendo. I can say... I have never had troubles with either. :)

Ok - so after about 8 months

Ok - so after about 8 months of getting a refurbed xbox from microsoft for the 1st time I got the RRoD, it once again is doing the same thing. Now I know 8 months is a long time as far as the RRoD goes, but still....no more warranty, although I hear at this point Microsoft will take them anyway. I did not go this route as I wanted to try to fix it myself this time, to avoid the perils of MS's customer service line, as well as the possibility of it getting lost in the mail somewhere.
So here's what I did: I checked out you tube for some info on fixing it, which was very helpful, except for the part where they mention "tools you will need." The tool for removing screws on the inside casing was said to be a Torque 10 screwdriver on one video, and a T-8 on another, and finally a T-9 on another. After tryin T- 10, and then T-8, neither worked. I am now going to try a T-9 and hopefully the screws will come free, as I know if I can get the darn things removed I can fix it( again the videos are in depth on fixing the problem).
As far as the lawsuit thing goes, by all means Microsoft should pay out for the faulty product as all my other systems going back to the Atari 2600 still work. Like all the other people who've posted have said, if it was any other business the things would have been recalled. But MS keeps putting out the product like there is no problem. Ah, the benifit of Big Business.

Well after reading many many

Well after reading many many forums about M$ 360 fiascos, I am sad to say I have joined the ranks of the RROD club. One box 13 months old (naturally 5 days after warranty) and an "Elite"(POS) at 16 months, both are playable for 1 to 5 mins before various LEDs light up red and freeze the box or do the little checkerboard pattern. I have given up on M$ support several times, but it seems to be the only option to get these bricks replaced. Anyone know if there is a suit for the state of NC I can add my name to?

I am going to get a PS3 today as a backup while the 360 garbage is being replaced. We need a third party to create an emulator pc add on or device to use the 360 games and gear and just remove the corporate ftards from this hardware cash generation system.

Xbox 360 RROD class action lawsuit filed in California

The Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death, hereby known as the RROD, has reared its ugly red head again Thursday, this time in the form of a class action lawsuit filed by disgruntled consumers in California.

The lawsuit alleges that an excessive number of Xbox 360 consoles have experienced hardware failures, aka the RROD. Perhaps more damning is the lawsuit's allegation that Microsoft knowingly manufactured faulty Xbox 360 consoles, and then concealed the failure rate in order to better compete with The PlayStation 3 and Wii.

As evidence, the lawsuit presents articles from a variety of gaming publications, including dailygamesnews.com, VentureBeat, Digital Media and Yahoo! Each of these articles states that Microsoft knew as far back as November 2005 that over 50% of Xbox 360 consoles were defective (emphasis added because that's an insane number in an industry where 3% or so is the accepted norm).

Lastly, the lawsuit seeks a court order that would force Microsoft to pay off the disenfranchised Xbox 360 owners with all profits that it made from sale of the console. A kind of RROD refund program, if you will.

More news, commentary, and predictions from The Industry Standard:
