Niche social network eCirkit quietly disappears

Earlier this year, The Industry Standard tagged social networking startup eCirkit as one of 10 net services that would probably fail. Now, that prediction seems to have come true. In August, eCirkit disappeared and the domain was replaced by a holding page with media quotes (including one from Red Herring!) and an invitation to contact the company for "licensing opportunities".

We contacted the company and were promised a response from the CEO, but never heard back. It's unclear how many users the company had, but given the the fact no one commented on the disappearance on blogs or online forums, it's unlikely many people were impacted or even cared.

Not every social network turns into Facebook or Bebo -- eCirkit should be a cautionary tale for anyone trying to get into the social networking business.
