Well.. I can tell you with some authority that they are hiring IT staff pretty heavily here in Austin, since a friend of mine who works there just put my resume in for a job. ;)

I think it makes sense for eBay to enter the cloud compute stage. It is time to put those resources to good use and we sure need a lot more of these 'neutral' Big clouds currently cornered by Amazon Web Services (Goog's AppEngine just isn't broad enough at this point). Not only is it good for the whole web industry in terms of benefits of competition but it also forces people to innovate as the main point is to lower the cost of deployment for web apps that will sure to surpass desktop applications in the near future.

Web-based mail is the prime example. It’s the long-awaited technical solution for the subscription software proponents.

eBay has been under fire recently, with lawsuits by manufacturers, and revolts by sellers. Some are starting to suggest that the online auction market is fading away, so what can eBay do to remain competitive?

The answer may lie in cloud computing, if this job posting is any indication. eBay has a full time position open in San Jose for a Director, Cloud Computing Engineering. Qualifications include a technical degree, 12+ years in developing and 8+ years managing large software teams, as well as experience with architecture, software best practices, all things Java, MySQL and Oracle databases, and 24/7 functional environments.

E-Commerce News features an interview with eBay research scientist Paul Strong today, and while he discusses a bit about eBay's infrastructure and "The Grid," he makes no mention of eBay moving into offering cloud computing services, nor does he mention the open position, or the "Cloud Computing intiative" mentioned in the posting.
