The Internet Economy workforce grew 36 percent to 2. 5 million employees in 1999, according to a study by the University of Texas at Austin. Even so, many Net businesses are being forced to cut hundreds of staff members. As of Nov. 9, 245 dot-coms had laid off at least 22,155 employees.
